Antique Victorian Oak Arts and Crafts Metamorphic Library Chair / Steps c.1895
A late Victorian oak metamorphic library chair of rare and unusual design, both stylistically and in its metamorphic mechanism rooted in the Arts & Crafts movement. The back is formed with a gently arched crest and shaped splat between tapering uprights, above a seat raised on boldly cut, forward-swept front legs that give the chair a strong architectural profile. The seat lifts on an integrated action to convert the chair into a stable set of steps.
Originally intended for use in a domestic library or study, the piece provides both seating and practical access to high shelving through an integrated and well-considered design. Its scale makes it well suited to a book-lined study or living space where occasional access to height is required.
Presented in very good antique condition with a warm, even patina and minor surface wear. The mechanism operates correctly and the structure is sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1895.
