Victorian furniture is often misunderstood, too easily dismissed as heavy, fussy and overdone. In truth, it was the most diverse and ambitious design period in British history. Spanning over six decades under Queen Victoria’s reign, it produced everything from Gothic Revival forms to flamboyant Rococo Revival to the earliest expressions of Arts & Crafts restraint. The through-line? A desire to impress, indulge, elevate and express status through form and material.
