Antique Indian Bronze Temple Bell
A 19th century Indian Hindu bronze temple bell or ghanta. The handle is double sided, hand carved with back-to-back figures of the monkey god Hanuman to one side and the half man, half bird god Garuda to the other. Such bells played an important role in rituals within the temple.
The bell itself is very finely engraved with depictions of elephants and floral decorations. The original clapper is in place and creates an incredibly long, loud and clear ring. The bell is in excellent condition with only surface wear and patina commensurate with the age of the item.
Indian, 19th century.
