Antique Victorian Oak Vernacular Side Chair c.1850
A mid-19th century North Country vernacular side chair in solid oak, hand crafted with the measured care typical of rural Lancashire and Yorkshire workshops. Features a shallow, hand-shaped curved seat, square legs and stretchers, and a fanned five-splat back between tapered uprights, the frame showing hand-worked rear chamfers and a flat front with a crisp incised border.
The oak surfaces show a warm, even patina, with the plain, functional lines consistent with practical farmhouse furniture of the period. Its character comes from the honesty of its construction. The slightly tapered legs, hand-cut seat edges and individually shaped back spars give it a grounded, functional presence, while the compact proportions make it easy to place. It works well as a standalone hall chair, desk chair or as a characterful accent in a kitchen or living space.
Presented in very good antique condition with a well-aged patina and light surface marks appropriate for its age. Structurally sound, stable, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1850.
