Antique Edwardian Oak Glastonbury Chair c.1910
An Edwardian Gothic Revival solid oak Glastonbury chair, the raked back panel relief-carved with an IHS Christogram set within a stippled reserve beneath a rosette crest rail, set over a solid seat flanked by swept arms featuring hand-carved foliate decoration, all raised on an X-frame base united by a low cross-stretcher, with wedged-peg joints throughout.
Reviving the famous 16th-century monastic design of Abbot Whiting, early 20th-century church workshops retained authentic wedged-peg mechanics, avoiding the glued joints of lesser commercial revivals. The generous depth created by its raked back makes it ideal to sit beside a hearth or positioned in a spacious hall, where its sculptural side-profile can be fully appreciated.
Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound with tight wedged joints throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1910.
