Antique William IV Mahogany Hall Chair c.1830
A William IV mahogany hall chair, the architectural back featuring a coronet-form castellated cresting and scrolled acanthus leaf carving, set over a solid mahogany seat with a simple moulded edge, all raised on turned legs with crisp lotus-leaf collars.
The form directly follows a published design by George Smith, Upholsterer and Furniture Draughtsman to His Majesty, illustrated in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide of 1826 (Plate XXXII, Hall Chairs). Smith engineered the cartouche back specifically to display painted family armorials, marrying Classical ornament with the architectural Gothic cresting characteristic of elite 1830s entrance hall seating.
Very good antique condition, with a deep natural lustre and warm patination with minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready for placement.
English, circa 1830.
