Antique Qing Dynasty Elm Horseshoe-Back Armchairs c.1890
A boldly detailed pair of Chinese horseshoe-back armchairs in solid elm, dating to the late Qing Dynasty.
Each chair features a dramatically arched crest rail with curled ends, supported by a carved triple-panel pierced backrest.
The shaped arms extend in a gentle curve, resting on chamfered supports that join a rectangular seat frame with carved aprons and pegged joints. The legs are united by plain stretchers and retain traces of an old oxblood lacquer finish, now softened and worn to reveal the warm natural grain of the elm beneath.
With a strong, sculptural presence with more decorative emphasis than typical scholar’s chairs, there would be ideal as a pair of hall chairs or placed as statement pieces in a study or library, equally at ease in traditional or modern interiors.
Presented in very good antique condition, with a deep, aged patina and characterful surface wear. Structurally sound, clean, and ready to place in the home.
Price is for Pair.
Chinese, circa 1890.
