Victorian Cast Iron Reverend Joshua Brooks Figure
This charming Victorian cast iron figure depicts Reverend Joshua Brooks, a principal character from the 1876 novel ‘The Manchester Man’ by Mrs Linnaeus Banks.
After a bit of work we identified this one in a cast iron collectors book as shown in the last picture. It turns out that the identity of this little man remained forgotten and unknown until 1975 when a theft from a Cathedral brought to light his name. The example shown in the book illustrates the heavily corroded condition in which most examples have been found. This one however is in really good condition in comparison, with a possibly original, but nevertheless very old paint job.
English, circa 1880.
